Going Nowhere Fast

Matthew 28:1-10
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb

What did they go to see? Were they “disappointed” by what they found?
I suspect that we often make a similar journey - venturing to a tomb that no longer bears the death and defeat we expect to find.
One thought. The angel, sitting on top of the stone seems sort of brash.
I think of the story of The Lord of the Rings where Pippin and Merry are at Isengard after Saruman the wizard has been overthrown. Gandalf has them watch over things until the rest of the Fellowship arrives. They make the most of the time there, having found some excellent brew and good weed to smoke, and when the Fellowship rides in, there they sit, atop the wall, drinking, smoking and welcoming their friends. . .

We're using the John text- I'm thinking of using "the eighth day of creation as a theme...http://www.kerux.com/documents/KeruxV01N1A2.asp has some nice imagess of creation & resurrection-under the Mary madgalene

Here's another thought from Acts 10:34- where it says "they killed Jesus...but God..." I thought of calling this "the big butt of God" sermon ha! Running with the theme, "but God..."worked well the past, God does through resurrection what we couldn't do and tried to stop him from doing.

I also like the ad in the Milwaukee newspaper which ran "Used tombstone for sale...A real bargain for someone named Dingo." In Christ through baptism our tombstones have been made obsolete!

And in Christ, we are sent into those places that have seemed like dead ends, places of injustice and brokenness, and we are called to bear the resurrection hope, to proclaim that these "tombs" are empty. The dead end of submitting to the devil's ways - of accepting the status quo is done. . . and we are to be about the task of "turning the world upside down." Acts 17
